At what height should an electrical outlet be installed?

The placement or installation of electrical outlets, sometimes called plugs or light switches in Mexico, is done at different heights depending on the environment: bathroom, kitchen, living room, etc.

Kitchen
In the kitchen, electrical outlets are usually installed either for the range hood or to connect other appliances such as a microwave oven or electric stove. In the case of the range hood, if it is not directly connected to the mains and has a power cord, the recommended height is 1.80 m. For outlets intended for appliances such as electric stoves, the recommended height is 1.20 m. It is important to note that outlets should not be installed above the kitchen sink or the area reserved for electric or gas cooktops. Bathroom: In the bathroom, outlets should be installed at a height between 0.90 m and 1.30 m. In this environment, it is crucial to consider certain safety aspects, such as not installing outlets inside or too close to the shower or bathtub. There is a minimum distance of 0.60 m that must be respected to avoid accidents.

Other environments
In other areas of a house, such as bedrooms or living-dining rooms, it is recommended to install electrical outlets fifty centimeters (50 cm) from the finished floor, although they can also be installed at a greater height, up to 1.30 m, depending on the desired functionality: for example, so that it is not behind a very heavy piece of furniture such as a bed, or so that it is accessible to children and people in wheelchairs.
