The placement or installation of electrical outlets—sometimes referred to as *enchufes* or *contactos de luz* in Mexico—is carried out at different heights depending on the room: bathroom, kitchen, living room, etc.
Kitchen
In the kitchen, electrical outlets are typically installed either for the exhaust hood or for connecting other appliances, such as a microwave oven or an electric stove. In the case of the exhaust fan, if it is not hardwired to the power supply and is equipped with a plug-in cord, the recommended installation height is 1.80 meters.
For outlets intended for appliances such as an electric stove, the recommended height is 1.20 meters.
It is important to note that electrical outlets should not be installed above the kitchen sink or the area designated for electric or gas cooktops.
Bathroom
In the bathroom, electrical outlets are installed at a height of between ninety centimeters (0.90 m) and one meter thirty centimeters (1.30 m).
In this setting, it is crucial to consider certain safety aspects—such as avoiding the installation of electrical outlets inside or too close to the shower or bathtub; a minimum distance of 60 centimeters (0.60 m) must be maintained to prevent accidents.
Other areas
In other parts of the house, such as bedrooms or the living-dining area, it is recommended to install electrical outlets fifty centimeters (50 cm) above the finished floor. However, they can also be placed at a greater height—up to 1.30 m—depending on the intended function: for instance, to avoid placement behind heavy furniture like a bed, or to ensure accessibility for children and wheelchair users.
